Driving a Minibus in the UK

Did you know that many people could actually drive a minibus in the UK without a special licence?  There are certain rules which should be followed.

Firstly, you might be able to drive a minibus seating up to 16 passengers as long as there’s no payment or reward from the passengers, ie it is not a paid for journey.  There are come conditions you must meet:

  • aged 21 or older
  • held your driving licence for at least 2 years
  • if you are over 70 years old, you meet the “group 2 medical standards”
  • you are driving on a voluntary basis and it is a social/leisure journey rather than a commercial journey
  • maximum weight of the minibus is no more than 3.5 tonnes
  • no towing of a trailer

If you are driving a minibus abroad, it is worth contacting the licencing authority in the country you are visiting to check whether it is ok for you to drive a minibus on your existing licence.
